A Spiritual Journey

“A Spiritual Journey,” a film by Isaac King for his Directing the Narrative class for Fall Quarter 2022 at SCAD, follows a lost traveler as he goes on a quest for spiritual truth.

Working as Director of Photography for this short film was a welcome challenge. The experimental nature of the film called for an equally evocative method of filmmaking to tell the story: the combination of standard motion imagery with 35mm still film stock, as well as several intricate stitched composites done in post-production. (Isaac is a wizard with the composites!)

Special thanks to director Isaac King for giving me the reigns on the visuals for this project and trusting me with his vision.

More information:

We shot this film using several cameras.

For the motion picture we used the RED Komodo 6K with a set of Rokinon 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm lenses, all using a ProMist filter to aid in achieving the old, gritty look we were going for.

For the still frames, we used two cameras:
A Pentax K1000 with a 50mm lens and a roll of Portra 400, and a Nikon F with a 55mm lens and a roll of Ilford HP5.
